- Ballard Power Systems (TSX:BLD) says it is still on track to double its product shipments this year despite challenges it expects in two of its three core businesses.
The Vancouver-based fuel cell company said it shipped a total of 284 product units in the first quarter, a 125 per cent increase compared to the 126 units for the same period last year.
Ballard, which sold its automotive development business earlier this year to focus on forklifts, backup power and residential cogeneration, plans to sell more than 1,700 units in 2008. Read more

Corning Inc. says its first-quarter profit more than tripled, exceeding Wall Street's expectations on strong demand for glass used in flat-screen televisions and computers.
The specialty glass and ceramics maker said Tuesday that earnings climbed to $1.029 billion, or 64 cents a share, up from $327 million, or 20 cents a share, a year earlier.
The company said sales surged 24 percent to $1.62 billion from $1.31 billion.
Excluding a one-time credit of $327 million, earnings came to 44 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected net profit of 42 cents a share on sales of $1.594 billion. Read more

Matsushita profit surges on sales of cell phones, TVs
Japanese electronics maker Matsushita's profit more than doubled in the January-March quarter, buoyed by strong sales of cell phones, flat-panel TVs and DVD players, the company said Monday.
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., the maker of the Panasonic brand, said it earned 61.6 billion yen ($589.47 million) from 23.4 billion yen the same period the previous year.
