If You Go: Fast food for 50 years
“Our daughters are doing the same thing, taking a month”
It's one of the rarest finds in Lexington: A restaurant that continues to thrive yet has raised the price of its burger by just 60 cents in 50 years and barely changed the menu.
In 1957, Burger Shakes opened on the Northern Beltline, now known as New Circle Road. Burgers and shakes were 19 cents, fries cost 14 cents, and Cokes were a dime.
Two brothers from Cumberland and their wives, Dr. Samuel and Betty Lou Isaacs, and Joe and Alberta Isaac, decided to leave the mountains and open the Lexington fast-food eatery. Read more

Audit says Brooklyn dentist collected $125,000 for phony fillings
“When the state pays a dentist for 52 fillings in one mouth in one day, the patient isn't the only one getting drilled”
Open wide and say ... are you kidding me?
A Brooklyn dentist was accused of making a $125,000 killing through improper Medicaid billings, claiming he drilled patients for more than two dozen fillings in a single office visit on 97 separate occasions, according to an audit released Friday by the state comptroller's office.
During one visit, Dr. Mohinder Mayell said he provided one patient with 52 fillings in a single sitting, the audit found _ a fairly impressive feat, given that the human mouth typically contains just 32 teeth. Mayell told investigators he did all the work that day in just two hours, the audit said. Read more

ADA Gives Seal to Wrigley Sugar-Free Gum
“As long as the testing process and the criteria for receipt of a seal is unclear, the exact meaning of the ADA's seal will remain obscure”
The nation's largest dentist group now says gum can be good for you, as long as it's sugar-free.
The American Dental Association said Tuesday it has awarded its seal of acceptance to Wrigley sugar-free gums Orbit, Extra and Eclipse _ based on studies funded at least partially by the maker of Wrigley gums, Chicago-based Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co.
It's the first time the ADA has allowed its seal to appear on gum after clearing it for thousands of other products since 1930.
The ADA said its independent review of the studies confirms those three gums have been shown to help prevent cavities, reduce plaque acid and strengthen teeth. Read more

Q Are there specific brands or types of sports mouth guards that are recommended by dentists? What's the difference between the $5 and $20 mouth guards at the sporting goods store?
A First of all, it is imperative that your child wear a mouthpiece in all contact sports. The risk of dental fractures and serious injury to the mouth exponentially increase without the protection of a mouthpiece. The type of mouthpiece varies greatly, but like many things 'you get what you pay for.' A good mouthpiece should use a 'boil and bite' technique to get a more accurate fit to the mouth, should be comfortable to wear and should provide jaw stabilization from any impact. The more you spend on a product, the greater protection you get because of the material used. Of course, popular brand names are always more expensive, but not necessarily better. Some brands also come with a dental warranty that guarantees protection if worn properly. If a child is wearing braces, it is very important to find a mouthpiece that is specially designed to accommodate the appliances and protect the lips and cheeks from braces. Read more
