Microsoft to Fight Google Apps with Web-Streamed Office

No doubt concerned over defections by smaller businesses and end users to Google Apps, Microsoft is modifying its license for Office 2007 in such a way that Web hosting service providers will be able to stream Microsoft Office for delivery through a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model.

Google Apps is $50 for one user per year. Free service is also available. It's going to be a long catch up game for Microsoft. If they are going to try they have to undercut google by atleast 1/3.

Google is into 'this game' for some time.
Microsoft will have to work hard to put Office on the web.
We'll see the results in few years.

Depends on how it's put on the web.
The UI could be in a browser, or in its own winforms application (with HTTP[S] enabled behind it). The latter has its advantages over purely browser-based.
Office is bloated with stuff now. v6 was my favorite, every version since then has added more bloat and moved things around with no value-added IMHO. However, the latest version I could navigate the UI far easier than previous versions.
I'd think they better lighten it up some for web use. Or, just go winforms UI with HTTP-enabled backend, which is rather easy to do.

what kind of service? Pradishap Huwiangiangvienanviaigawana on the other end of the line claiming he speaks English?

Or, some bloated web site with so much cr*p on it you're really in self-service mode.

There's not a lot of "service" you can get for $50. But, then again, there's a lot of market out there perhaps not wanting/neededing/asking for it.
