Brunswick shares soar despite earnings drop
“Sales for the latest quarter reflected lower demand for marine products, particularly in the U.S., where industry retail sales were down about 17 percent”
Brunswick Corp., saddled with special charges linked to the company's effort to reduce capacity in response to weaker demand, said first-quarter earnings from continuing operations dropped 61 percent, on a 3 percent downturn in sales.
The results nonetheless pushed Brunswick shares smartly higher. In early New York Stock Exchange trading Thursday, the company's shares were up $1.37, or 9.1 percent, at $16.50.
The big-ticket boats, marine engines and other recreational equipment that Brunswick manufactures are 'discretionary' goods -- purchases consumers can defer when they grow uneasy about future economic conditions -- and Brunswick's sales have been under pressure for more than a year now as the U.S. economy loses momentum. Brunswick warns on possible identity theft
Brunswick Corp. disclosed Monday that an electronic devices that scans customers' drivers' licenses to make sure they're of legal drinking age was stolen from a company-owned bowling facility in suburban Naperville.
The scanning device, which verifies whether a license has been tampered with by reading a license's magnetic strip, is capable of retaining personal information of up to 700 of the latest patrons whose cards were swiped through the machine.
Brunswick said the device stolen recently from the Brunswick Zone in Naperville contains information -- such as driver's license number, date of birth and first and last names -- of customers whose licenses were scanned at tehr Naperville location between March 20 and March 29. Read more
