Wirtz Beverage in deal to expand in state

Wirtz Beverage Group will form what be Illinois' largest liquor and beer distributorship in a deal that with Glazer's Distributors of Illinois that will result in the closing of Chicago's Union Beverage Co. and its brands being folded in under a new Wirtz operation.
Under the agreement, Union, which distributes Brown Forman spirits, E&J Gallo and a number of smaller brands, will cease operations in the state effective June 30. The new company, Judge and Dolph, LLC, will open the next day and assume distribution of the former Union brands as well as current Judge and Dolph Ltd brands, including Diageo , Barton Brands, Sidney Frank and others. Lassonde Industries ends 2007 on strong note, Q4 profit nearly triples
- Strong fourth-quarter operating results powered Lassonde Industries Inc. (TSX:LAS.A) to a $23.3-million profit last year, up 70 per cent from 2006, the producer of bottled juices and other food products announced Thursday..
Lassonde's fourth-quarter net income was $9.3 million or $1.40 per share, up 138 per cent from $3.9 million or 58 cents per share in fourth quarter of 2006.
Its annual sales rose 13.5 per cent to just under $401 million in 2007, including $112.7 million in the fourth quarter. That compared with sales of $353.3 million in 2006, including $91.8 million in the fourth quarter of that year. Read more

Anheuser-Busch heir arrested at underage drinking party in Godfrey
A member of St. Louis' well-known beer-brewing family got arrested Wednesday in Madison County -- on a charge of underage-drinking.
Adolphus August Busch V was arrested with a group of other teens at a Godfrey apartment. Busch, 17, listed his residence as 1600 Highway 79 in O'Fallon, Mo., which also is listed in government records as the residence of Adolphus August Busch IV, an heir to the Anheuser-Busch fortune.
The Busches could not be reached for comment.
Anheuser-Busch issued a statement: 'Neither this individual, nor his parents are employees of Anheuser-Busch. This company, therefore, has no involvement in this matter.' Read more

Industrial group Smiths dampened speculation of an imminent break-up as boss Philip Bowman unveiled a near 20% rise in pre-tax profits.
Chief executive Mr Bowman said the medical devices-to-airport security firm had 'many strong positions in growing markets' and there were opportunities for more growth through bolt-on acquisitions.

Swiss Water Decaffeinated Coffee Income Fund says Q4 and annual profit rises
- Swiss Water Decaffeinated Coffee Income Fund (TSX:SWS.UN) says its profit perked up 47 per cent in the fourth quarter and 13 per cent in fiscal 2007.
The Vancouver-based fund said fourth-quarter profit was $837,000 or 12.5 cents per unit, compared to a profit of $571,000 or 8.6 cents per unit for the same quarter the year before. The fourth-quarter jump is due largely to derivative gains, which were partially offset by lower margins on lower volumes.
The company said processing volumes fell nearly 11 per cent during the quarter, citing the inability of a major customer to deliver its Colombian coffees on time. Read more

Rocky Mountain Resources appoints Thomas DeMull as president and CEO

- Rocky Mountain Resources Corp. (TSXV:RKY), a Vancouver-based junior miner, says it has appointed mine developer Thomas DeMull as the company's new president and chief executive, with plans to build the company's Nevada specialty metals project.
The appointment is effective March 18, Rocky Mountain said Wednesday.
Since 1995, DeMull has been with Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE:NEM) in a number of positions, most recently as both process area manager and technical advisor on the Conga project in northern Peru. Read more
