Campaign money flows as votes near on KC's smoking, transit issues
“More than $220,000 of tainted tobacco money has been brought into our community and fronted by a few bar owners.”
Tobacco giant Reynolds American Inc. has pumped $220,258 into the campaign to defeat a ban on smoking in Kansas City bars and restaurants, campaign disclosures showed Monday.
That amount constitutes 98 percent of the $224,645 raised by opponents of Question 3 on the April 8 ballot. The contribution encompassed $175,000 in cash and $45,258 as an in-kind contribution.
Meanwhile, proponents of the ban have raised about $195,000, with the biggest contributions coming from the American Cancer Society ($100,000), the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City ($50,000), and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids ($25,000). Read more
