Sara Lee earnings miss forecasts

Sara Lee Corp. said fiscal third-quarter earnings excluding a host of onetime items inched higher in the latest quarter despite the drag of higher costs for many key ingredients.

Even with the help of a lower tax rate, however, the Downers Grove packaged-food giant's latest earnings fell short of analyst forecasts by two pennies.

Earnings for the quarter ened March 29, adjusted to strip out the skewing effect of charges and other unusual items, rose to were $249 million, or 22 cents a diluted share, up modestly from the year-ago quarter's adjusted income of $242 million. Read more
