Hey you are brillant prost.... with less defecation and urination going aboard United airplanes... the bean counters can further decide to reduce the amount of lavatory waste water on the none vaccuum lav equiped airplanes.

Perhaps this will tend to reduce the amount of stool ring samples left for the next passengers which is a common occurence on the vaccuum lav equipped plains now that recirculated water is a thing of the past on many airplanes.

The price to fly one mile in the US is up 7.5%: ATA
By Christopher Hinton
NEW YORK (MarketWatch)-- "The average price a domestic passenger pays to fly one mile in July climbed 7.5% to 14.6 cents from 15 cents in the same month last year, according to data from the Air Transport Association released late Wednesday. On a month-to-month basis, the average price fell 3% from 16.2%, but remains 7% higher year to date, the trade group said. For transatlantic flights, the average price rose 8.4% in July to 14.5 cents a mile, while flights across the Pacific were up nearly 11% to 13.4 cents. Passengers flying to Latin America saw prices rise 13.7% to 15.6 cents a mile."

So if your CAR gets 25 miles a gallon and gas costs $3.75 a gallon, your cost for gas only is 15 cents a mile. Figure in maintenance, depreciation, food during your travel (truck stops don't offer free meals) it's STILL cheaper to fly than drive. QUIT YER WHINING!

Watch what Untied rivals do, particularly Asian airlines, in the down turn. By offering good stuff they STILL POST PROFIT. Think why can't United. The answer is not in meal or toilet, morons !!

I have flown almost a million miles on United in my lifetime. I was one of the apparently stupid "loyal customers". Mr. Tilton, what do you want me to think now? I would rather you just raise the seat prices to reflect your costs and the competition. If you cannot compete....don't act stupid.....do what a good CEO would do.....make a business decision!

Just another example of how stupid many of the airline executives are. This is an industry in free fall with CEO's without talent, creativity, logic, or common sense trying to lead. You can grab a Freshman business student at Penn's Wharton School who just bought his first textbook last week who could make better decisions.

Sure, Asian airlines ALWAYS post a profit because they are subsidized and protected by their governments as a matter of national pride. And if you are a consumer, you should take advantage of the fine price and service and enjoy having the unwitting taxpayers of these countries underwrite your travel!

The fact is, the airline consumer is the only one to blame because they have proven time and time again that no matter how bad the product, they will buy if the price is low enough.

If you are looking for a precedent, look up Freddie Laker. In 1978 he started flying DC-10's across the Atlantic for $99 each way. NO FOOD, NO special comforts. Just a wonderfully low price. Considering how high BA's fares were, buying a lunch to save $300 was not a bad trade.

Then as now, all you have to do to get better service was pay more.

I've been a 1K or Prem. Exec flyer on United for the last 10 years, but it's getting ridiculous. Previously, they would make exceptions to service charges or go the extra mile in special situations for their frequent flyers, but no longer. As a result, it's no longer worthwhile putting up with their subpar inflight service (old planes, ancient in-flight entertainment systems, et al), when you have plenty of int'l carriers with new planes and much better service offerings. As far as domestic travel, Continental joins Star Alliance next year - better service, free meals, and in-seat inflight entertainment systems coming next year. As someone with 950,000 lifetime miles on United, it's sad to say, but United will become pretty redundant when that happens. It's one thing to nickel and dime the infrequent flyer, but when you start doing it to the people who pay the bills you have to question what in the hell this management team is thinking. The best thing that could happen now is for CO to buy United and put it out of its misery.
