US Airways To Charge For Some Window, Aisle Coach Seating

US Airways To Charge For Some Window, Aisle Coach Seating APRIL 17, 2008 -- US Airways beginning May 7 will charge customers at least $5 per leg for window and aisle seat assignments "in the first several rows ...

Today, US Airways is announcing the Choice Seats program which, beginning May 7, will offer customers using Web check-in at usairways.com the option to pay as little as an additional $5 per flight for an aisle or window seat assignment in the first several rows of coach. There are a few important things to know about this new program.

-First, the number of Choice Seats on each aircraft will vary by aircraft type, but in general, eight percent of the assigned seats in coach will be for sale.

-Choice Seats will be available on all US Airways-operated flights except the US Airways Shuttle and Colgan-operated Saab 340 aircraft.

- For now, Choice Seats will only be available through Web check-in. Choice Seats are scheduled to be available to customers later this year at airport ticket counters and kiosks.

- Importantly, as with the second checked bag fee, we will offer Choice Seats free of charge to our Dividend Miles Preferred members.

- Also, prices will vary depending on destination and segment length.

It is getting pretty pathetic.

No food, pay 25-50$ for a second bag,$5 per let, advertisement on the luggage bins, flight crews that have a "sense of entitlment" attitude that only bitch about things half the time.

Pretty soon it is going to be you can book / reserve your flight with us for $500......,

but to actually get on the plane will be an extra $250....,

and if you have any questions, you have to call New Delhi where the fuckers have never flown before, much less have a clue about the United States.

Oh yeah, and US Airways won't refund you the difference if you need to change your flight.

E.g., you bought a ticket for $500, you need to change it and the new one costs $250. Not only do you lose the $250 credit, but you STILL have to pay a $100 change fee.

US Airways blows.

if this keeps going on, and it may, be prepared for the parody-like situations on films where the toilets will become pay toilets, window shades are removed, put a quarter in, and the overhead bin will open. you folks wanted it, ya got it! deal with it, or begin to pay the fares that should be charged in this day and age. only then, will the service we once all enjoyed will return. you have options, the bus, the train, lcc's, legacy carriers (coach or first class), or private jets. your choice.

As far as I'm concerned I think they should charge more. Then more people will stay away from them and -again- the "B" word! I haven't darkend the door of a USAirways plane since Mohawk - and won't! Screw 'em...

As an FA myself, flying international trips, it is funny to me when our European passengers come and ask us to BUY a can of Coke or a bottle of water. They can't believe that we don't charge for bevs and food like alot of their domestic carriers do.
Fares have GOT to reflect the high price of fuel.(The price of your ticket certainly does NOT reflect my pitiful paycheck.) The airlines are private businesses and it is NOT your right to fly. If you can afford to BUY a ticket, then you can fly.

It's always easier to trash the airlines instead of looking at the root cause for any $$ hike -- let's consider politics and the price of fuel. HELLO ! The airlines are scrambeling to make ends meet and stay in business any way they can. When all the legacy carriers are gone and the majors demand more & more $$'s lets here the whining then !? Good luck @ the bus station !

Wouldn't it be fine theater if passengers had
the spunk and perseverance to reserve nothing but the center seat in these "choice seat" sections, boycotting aisle and window seats?
Look at the amount of spread-out room that person would have with the arm rests stowed!
Nickle and dime us paying passengers and we will
find alternative travel methods.

Many of the airlines do it already. USair is just catching up.

Most airlines are making millions a quarter because people are willing to pay for those premium seats. Most airlines however release those seats at the gate without having to pay for them.

Its also nice to see not only my airline getting bitched about...nice to see the bs is spread out evenly amongst all carriers.

If people want all the ameneties for free like .meals.movies.blankets.pillows . etc. then the airlines would have to start charging 2008 prices instead of 1985 prices like they are now.

AND dont drive ...fly...its cheaper in most cases to fly than to drive your car and a lot less stressful....well for some anyway.

Here is the solution with being fed up like everybody else with corporate greed and gigantic executive pay and bonuses is to create a Consumer Union and use the power of our pocketbooks and wallets force these companies to back off their greed.
If you told US Airways that "my 80 million plus membership is not going to fly you if we have to pay 5 dollars for a window seat" Power in numbers. Fight back once for and all

Go ahead and do that.

I really dont think selling a ticket to go lets say LAX to NYC for $299.00 round trip is called greed. Hmmm i wonder how far you would get in your car for 299!

RWG. Whats wrong with selling a little extra leg room? I'm 6'4 and I suffer every time I fly. An extra $5.00 a leg will not hurt anyone. There will be so many people applying for this there are sure to be problems. I can see it now. Two people have the same seat assignment. Both are 6'5++. Both are angry. Get the sky marshall. Can't wait to hear about the first incedent . What a mess that will be.
Next is 'Bring your own toilet paper'. Paper towles will still be handed out but only to First Class passengers. Drip dry or bring your own.
