Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines may announce a merger to create the world's largest carrier as early as Tuesday, people familiar with the talks said.

What Delta is after is NWA's Pacific route and hub in NRT. DL will get rid of B747-400, DC9s, MSP and MEM hub while closing CVG on DL side leaving at least 20,000-40,000 employees out of jobs.

DAL can't get rid of the -400's. DAL only has 8 airplanes that can cross the Pacific now, and it'd be years before they could order new ones to replace the 16 -400's in use now. |

Yeah, right Fred. The entire domestic system and DTW are insignificant. If you dump 40,000 employees, who do you dump? Can DL just close major terminals with no resistance from someone? Be something to watch. I think your predictions are wanting. Dumping 40,000 employees would make them smaller than they are now. NWA only has 30,000. |
