Continental Airlines said Sunday that it had abandoned merger talks with United Airlines and was planning to remain an independent carrier, a blow to lengthy efforts by United to find a merger partner.

1 Let's see if UA is serious about courting USAir again although I see very little advantage in this alliance vs. Continental other than east coast presence along with PHX and LAS. The western USAir hubs are low-fare-oriented and United has been focusing on higher margin markets. The PHL hub is useless to UA along with the A330's. A stronger CLT hub could really cause DL/NW fits which might be fun to watch. Now that USAir has separated from ALPA, the pilot merging issues could be very interesting. Think ALPA will be nice to the USAir guys? |

1 I think people have forgotten how nasty and cut throat United was to Continental back in the 90's. I for one would be happy to see them falter and fade away into the realm of forgotten airlines. |

NO I'd sy that with 200K miles that I fly each year aorund the globe I choose UNITED for the fact that they have lie flat beds in FIRST and in Business. The inflight crew is usually very friendly and accomodating, the food has gotten much better, in fact quite good. The customer service at the Red Carpet Club is excellent and treats me very well. United Airlines has the reach to Asia that suits my schedule and most importantly United Airlines belongs to the Star Alliance which is by far the best alliance and I gladly fly it around the globe as a very happy customer. Although I like United Airlines as my US carrier of choice, I would always opt out for a Star Alliance member because the foreign carriers are incomparable to the US carriers. I have an international business and it takes me everywhere imaginable and I have flown millions of miles. I have tried Continental, Delta, American and Northwest. I live in NYC and I prefer to connect and to keep on United because I feel it has a superior product to the others. It's a shame that their management doesn't know this. |

Impressive!! Hmmm u travel the amount that I do and then post ur opinion. I'm very certain you would opt for foreign carriers over US carriers and of course a nice bed in frist or business class?? So if it's a US carrier u choose to sit/sleep on a UAL seat or any other uncomfortable US carrier's seat. At least UAL has Economy Plus in the even that first and business is full...u still get the leg room! Go right ahead an "love" your favorite airline. I don't have a favorite...I just go with the best product available for my own comfor and convenience! Nothing important or high about that. Just innate self preservation! |

First, I do not have to travel at ALL to post my opinion....Secondly, YOUR certainty on what I might opt for fails to surprise me, and takes me right bact to my opening statement. And in your last sentence, could you have meant "inane" self preservation? |

1 This guy is reliving ancient history. UAL's books were not good enough for CAL to consider. The management at CAL did not want a drain on its books by hooking up with a junk airline |
