Accused rapist back in CMPD custody

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police detectives are interviewing Jose Rivera, a 26-year-old illegal immigrant charged with raping three Charlotte women in 2004 and 2005 and who was facing deportation until police charged him with the crimes last month.

Rivera, who was in custody and awaiting deportation in Atlanta, was brought back to Charlotte yesterday, police announced today. He's being held in the Mecklenburg County jail.

Before his return, the Honduran native had been jailed in Mecklenburg County at least eight times since 2004. He was deported in November 2006 but was caught trying to re-enter the country, which led to his time in custody in Atlanta. Read more
