Repairs Lead To Traffic Trouble Downtown
Drivers are being strongly urged to avoid Boston's financial district and take public transportation to work after a weekend water main break that flooded the underground gas system.
Officials said Congress Street would be reduced to one lane Monday and that the presence of trucks and other equipment would significantly impact traffic in the area.
National Grid has already pumped more than 26,000 gallons of water out of the flooded system. Hundreds of gas customers in the financial district and the North End lost service when the flood early Saturday morning caused a nearby gas line to rupture. Read more

Middle school college programs target young students early
“It doesn't matter what I have to do.”
Most students at Boston's Mildred Avenue Middle School come from low-income, minority familes, and have parents who didn't go to college. Many don't speak English at home and have no plans to attend college.
Which is exactly why officials decided to make it the only middle school in the city with a full-time college counseling office. They want to persuade the school's 560 students that college is attainable.
Middle school offices specifically dedicated to college guidance are part of a growing trend at schools across the country as officials try to make sure students don't begin planning too late. Read more
