NEW YORK, Oct. 16 -- Fingers were on the edge of numbness. Unexposed skin was red and angry. Flags whipped in the wind above the familiar white frieze, and a thin, icy mist at times floated down from the sky. But during a frigid Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Friday night, nothing at Yankee Stadium was quite as cold as the heart of CC Sabathia -- particularly if you were a Los Angeles Angels hitter trying to turn around his piercing fastballs.
With Sabathia shutting down the Angels on four hits over eight dazzling innings, and with the Angels playing an uncharacteristically disjointed game, the Yankees strolled to a 4-1 victory in front of an announced crowd of 49,688 that braved 45-degree game-time temperatures.
