Tom Brookens is headed back to the major leagues. Former Oneonta Tigers manager Brookens, who spent the past two seasons managing Double-A Erie, was named Detroit's first base, outfield and baserunning coach Monday.

Long 6th, big lead seemed to chill Tigers' Verlander

In the top of the sixth inning Monday night, the Tigers scored seven runs and increased Justin Verlander's lead to 10-0. At that point, Verlander appeared to suffer the double whammy of cooling off during his team's long inning and then not being sure how aggressive to be with a big lead.

Larish to have season-ending surgery

Jeff Larish won't be available for the Tigers once rosters expand in September. The left-handed-slugging prospect will miss the remainder of the season because of surgery on his right wrist, correcting an injury that has bothered him for at least the past month.
