When you think of small, sporty cars the first brand to pop into your mind is probably not Suzuki.

Last week while in Japan for the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show , I got the chance to see Suzuki's headquarters in Hamamatsu, which is about a 90-minute bullet train ride to the southeast of the Japanese capital.

Forget everything you know about Suzuki. Actually, that should probably be easy, since aside from the old Sidekick, most Americans barely know the brand even exists.

Japanese automaker Suzuki has long been the doormat of the U.S. auto industry. The company, known for making very good and competent motorcycles, scooters and recreational three and four wheel vehicles, has long made and sold cars and SUVs in the U.S. that either lack on styling, quality or both.
