Truths and myths about how to save on gas
Truths Know the numbers To improve mileage, you have to know what your current mileage is.

For hybrid owners, like The Original Sam, you're often better off doing city stop-and-go driving. As long as traffic doesn't back up for long periods of time while running the air conditioner, a hybrid (at least a Toyota hybrid) will turn off while stopped. Plus, if traffic is moving slowly, you can run on battery (The Original Sam found that it works at speeds <40 MPH). Check out http://www.hypermiling.com/ for more info. Good luck!

FYI - The Original Sam does not endorse all the radical ideas in Hypermiling. Just those that suggest ways to improve hybrid mileage, such as coasting to stops and pulse and go methods. (The Original Sam read the Jay Hamburg article after submitting his first post)

This article does not give decent ways to save gas. Light on gas and use brakes lighter. air tires to the max. RPM less than 2000.

After the pump is turned off there is still some gas in the hose under pressure. Squeezing the nozzle will relieve the pressure and a small amount of gas in the tank.

Don't start the engine, push the car for unlimited mileage.

One disagreement in this article is the tailgate issue. Notice the engineer from Ford said the cab design helps the airflow over the bed. I, as well as most any truck owners, can testify to the fact that at road speeds you can actually feel the tugging on the tailgate. Shortly after purchasing my truck, I did a number of things to the engine as far as air intake and exhaust and both helped the mileage. The one single thing that I did that helped more than all the other things was a hard shell fiberglass bed cover. My highway mileage improved almost 2 miles to the gallon putting me up in the 22 to 23 mpg range for a V-8 truck. Obviously, it didn't have much if any affect around town. Easy starts, timing lights and traffic ahead and coasting up to intersections all help. There are some long lights and if you arrive just as it is turning red, turn the engine off. If you have an automatic and sitting at a light, at least put it in neutral. It takes the strain off the engine. If it is a manual, keep the clutch depressed. Doesn't sound like much, but the less the strain on the engine the less consumption. Every little bit helps and with today's prices, every drop is important.

Steve,
Air is 78% nitrogen. Why would anyone pay $10 per tire for something they already have. Bad advise! Jim C |

Who would ever think buying gas in the morning would make a difference. That's moronic.

Sorry about the typo: advice
not advise!! Jim C |

Agreed! But there are plenty of people who believe it. I received an e-mail recently full of "gas-saving" tips, and the morning purchase of fuel was among them. The email was another hoax, albeit sent with good intentions by a friend who is trying to help people save money. For any and all suspected Internet myths, go to www.snopes.com . It's reliable because each entry includes a list of sources backing up the research. |

And the number one way to save money on gas is..........
Do not put another Republican in office. |

While I can't stand the current ding bat in office, if you put Obama into the White House, your taxes are going to go THROUGH THE ROOF ! Personally, I will take the current gas prices than giving the government another $4000/yr ( and still pay $4.00/gallon for gas ). Obama is all about change, but has yet to say how he is going to change anything or how he plans to pay for it. I have said it before and I will say it again....if we want to see cheaper gas prices we are going to have to do several things #1 Quit waiting for the government to do something. It is not in their personal best interest to help YOU. All politicians are in big businesses back pocket--that is their gravy train and they are not going to jeopardize that to help YOU. #2 If we want to strengthen the US dollar we are going to have to do it ourselves. STOP BUYING CHINESE GOODS. It is difficult and in some case impossible. However, there are sites on the internet where you can find AMERICAN MADE GOODS...many great clothing companies are not only made in the USA, but with raw goods from the USA. If every American bought $100 less in Chinese crap can you imagine what that would do to the trade imbalance ? IT WILL STRENGTHEN THE US DOLLAR, THUS MAKING IT CHEAPER TO BUY OIL ON THE WORLD MARKET. In the meantime, buy American, drive less or better yet, CARPOOL---we did it in the 1970s and it WORKS. I bought a scooter--just filled up a few minutes ago. My total gas bill for my weekly commute and errands $3.89 TOTAL. I drove my car a couple of times and that was another 2 gallons. #3 Supply & Demand---if there is less of a demand ( in my case, about 15 gallons per week LESS ) the price will go down. |

2 things about fuel savings that are under the myth list that is actually true. buy gas when its cool. thats true. reason being although the underground tank temp is almost always the same, its when the gas leaves the nozzle into your tank is where the evaporation process happens. the hotter the atmosphere and air temp, the higher the evaporation rate. second is lowering your tailgate. mythbusters show proved that if the tailgate is down, it is the easiest way to reduce drag on you pickup. however, shortbed small pickups have a fuel savings that is unremarkable in fuel savings. i can tell you i have a 94 mazda longbed pickup and i gained 3 miles to the gallon highway. ill put my tailgate down.

Why don't we use 100% of the continental shelf to drill, Alaska and the oil shale in Colorado?
Why not? Because the Democrats are in the pocket of big oil. Big oil wants shortages and high prices. And with the Democrats and useful idiot environmental wackos thats what they got. This next elections we the people need to dump the Democrats and put the grown ups in charge. If you care about the environment get rid of the tariffs on bio fuel and get flex fuel vehicles. Why do Democrats impose high tariffs on the clean bio fuel? Why the farmers special interest and big oil of course Any fool that believes the Democrats are for the common man needs to look at their actions and not their words. The common man needs to drive just like the fat cats. |

I was on a web site looking at the new taxes the democrats want to impose on the country. I don't think joe six pack has a clue to the extent they want to destroy capitalism and the economy. Back to th 70's. 10% unemployment, 10% inflation and 20% interest rates. Why do democrats hate America so much? |

I remember when Al Gore was running against the idiot in front Texas in 2000. The idiot from Texas said if we elected Al gas would be $2.40 a gallon. I wonder if the idiot from Texas would call Al up and find out where that $2.40 a gallon gas is so I can go and get some. I could really use some Al Gore gas now. It used to cost me $14.00 to fill up the Honda. Friday night I paid over $60.00. That is an extra $2,392.00 a year I am paying for the idiot from Texas' gas.
