The universe may be speeding up, but Robert Miller makes an eloquent case for slowing down.

The speed limit through Danbury is 55 not 65 .How dare you suggest people travel at 80 mph just to go with the flow of people breaking the law. Slow down and obey the law.

Your points spot on! Using the left lane for passing would make everyones commute better.
Although I know it is not legal to use a cell phone, if you are going to anyway get in the right lane!!!

You people are idiots. The 55 speed limit exists only until Exit 5 - after that, the posted speed limit is 65mph. And the average speed of traffic on I-84 ANYWHERE on the highway is between 70-75mph.

This guy has it right. People who come up behind some selfish slowpoke whip out into the middle or left lanes and cause near-miss accidents at least twice a day.

Left-hand exits are no big deal - just as long as the drivers know that's the lane they're supposed to be in! I can't tell you how many times I've come up on Exit 7 just to see 4 or 5 cars playing "eenie meenie miney moe" and jumping from lane to lane as the drivers try to figure out what lane they're supposed to be in. It's completely ridiculous. And I'm amazed more people haven't died at that exit than have already.

Bottom line is, people who don't travel at the speed of the traffic flow are the cause of most of the accidents on the highway. People will die and it will be YOUR fault.

Great misinformation in this article.

"Ironically", in Europe, they use kilometers per hour instead of miles per hour. They routinely drive 100 KPH, which is approximately 62 MPH. The recommended speed on the Autobahn is only 130 KPH, which is approximately 82 MPH.

Good luck trying to slide that one past the cops.
You're kidding yourself to think I'll risk a ticket because you can't be bothered to obey the law.
I'm not going to burn my gas excessively just so you can treat the highway as your own personal racetrack.
Senior citizens have rights, too. I happen to NOT be one, but I have respect for them.
Wait 'til you get older and your reflexes slow. You'll be singing a different tune.

No! Someone decided that a certain speed was safe through Danbury, the speeders need to slow down. Where do you get off telling people that they need to break the law so that you can go fast. What gives you the right to even think like that. Everyone has a right to use the road at the posted speed limits not at whatever speed they want.

I've got news for you, pal. The state cops do give tickets in the Danbury area on I-84 -- but they give them to SLOW DRIVERS who don't keep up with the traffic flow! Why?? Because SLOW drivers are the cause of most accidents, THAT'S why.

Senior citizens whose "reflexes are slow" shouldn't be driving on the HIGHWAY anyway! That's just an accident waiting to happen.

Travel at the speed of the traffic flow, or get run into. Why be stupid and put YOUR life on the line as well as everyone else's?

I don't think there should be speed limits at all. Over in Europe they don't have speed limits on the Autobahn, and everyone travels at the average speed of 70 with no problems whatsoever.

Where do you get off telling me I can't drive at whatever speed I choose? If the cops won't ticket me - and they won't, they only go after the slow drivers - then why are you concerning yourself with what I do? If I-84 is too fast for you then stay off it. You're only going to wind up causing an accident anyway.

Can we have your phone number so that when we get stopped for speeding we can call you and you can explain it to the cop?

Until they change all the signs to read "Speed Suggestion," I'm going to drive as if the car behind me is an unmarked police car.

Good, just make sure you stay in the right hand SLOWPOKE lane. Otherwise I'll hit you in such a way that it will make the cop believe the accident was YOUR fault. And YOU can do the explaining, genius.

I always stay in the right lane when I'm doing 55mph. I never said otherwise. And there's no way you can hit me from behind and make it look like my fault. A rear-end collision is always the fault of the driver in the back.

Eventually you will slow down.
You will wind up hitting a dear, dog, coyote, turkey or another car trying to avoid that truck tire in the road. It will happen it is just a matter of time. Your reflexes are not as fast as you think.
Your chances of survival if you are doing the speed limit is much greater than if you are doing 80+ miles per hour.

It is amazing how much slower you will go when your insurance goes up or after you spend a bit of time in the hospital healing.

There is way to much traffic between exits 8 and 1 to be driving 80 mph but I see it everyday.

I know everyone else should get off the road because you feel that you have a right to go as fast as you want but they probably will not so you are just going to have to accept that fact, and you will if you live long enough.

it's white trash hicks like you with your fancy cars and motorcycles who put everyone else at risk.

go back to Mayberry, Gomer.

you think you can lie and hurt people and get away with it? The time is coming soon when immigrants will outnumber white trash hicks by 3:1. Only then will we be safe on the streets.

when taking drivers ed, they tell you the law on the highway is to keep up with the speed of traffic, within reason. If traffic is moving at 75, you go 75. The reasoning behind this is that 2 cars traveling the same speed cannot crash into one another. Also, if your going to drive 55 on the highway, stay in the far right lane and let others pass you on the left. Nothing makes me angrier than someone (usually a woman) sitting in the left lane (passing lane) going 55 in a 65 with a line of cars tailgaiting behind for a mile stretch. It is not safe and it backs everything up, making trips longer and less efficient.

Within reason is the key part of that phrase. It is not reasonable to go 80 mph between exits 1 thru 8. You are putting your life and others at risk.
The left hand exits should all be changed no matter what the cost, to many people have been hurt and KiIIed in this section of road because of them.
I agree no one should be going 55 in the left hand lane but how are they going to get of of the highway when there are left hand exits.

It is not just cars driving slow many of the big trucks are also going slow because they cannot get a head of steam up thru the turn and up the grade.

Who decided that and why should we listen to them? Those speed limits are outdated, especially on the highway. Cars brake and handle much better now.

Why is it not reasonable to go 80? I think it is perfectly reasonable. Who are you to decide what is reasonable and what is not? And driving, not matter what the speed, is putting your life and everyone else's at risk. There is an inherent risk in driving anywhere at any speed. When you get behind the wheel, you are accepting that risk. You weigh the risk of crashing against the benefit of getting somewhere you want or need to be.

And the risk of not getting there alive goes up with every mph you increase your speed. Hopefully today is not your day to learn the hard way. Slow down and stay Alive
