Falling oil prices could prove a blessing or a curse to automakers

The slumping price of oil has given carmakers a real head scratcher: Is this good or bad news? "It's a tough question," said Aaron Bragman, auto industry analyst at Global Insight.

People would be stupid to go back to buying pickups/SUVs again, unless you have a need for one. I would have thought by now that we "got the message", we have to get off the foreign oil teat, no matter where it comes from.

Remember, I said it first.

I thought the price of gas would hit $5 a gallon. Well, it never did, but it came real close.

People started changing. Some changes may have been temporary; perhaps they commuted via bus or train instead of car. Then again, some of these new habits may stick.

But, in a world where it seems that everyone leases their car, a change did indeed happen. When their hummer lease was up, many of these people choose to lease a prius. The result is they are locked into that new prius for the next three years.

Demand will drop, which it did, and now the price will fall. You fooled me with the tech bubble, and again with the housing bubble. I will not be fooled by the energy bubble. Yes, we do need to get off of the “oil standard”. Yes, all these things are good, and we are finally moving in the right direction. Cars like the Chevy Volt are something that many of us could be driving, as it will run forty miles on pure electricity. Now we need to find more ways to make electricity, but the point is your electric car can actually be a solar or nuclear powered vehicle, not just an oil powered vehicle.

However, I do expect that gas prices will be sub $2 a gallon within a year.

However, hopefully people will continue moving towards electric powered cars, and not revert back. The real question is did gas prices stay high long enough?

If prices do fall low enough, look for the government to start taxing gas at an even higher rate. It would be nice if that tax money would be used for research into alternative energy, but we all know it will not.
