Beleaguered General Motors Corp., which is trying desperately to change perception of its brands after a quick trip to bankruptcy court this summer, has found further proof that a new round of ads promising money-back guarantees is working.

The Arlington plant's parking lot was empty after General Motors closed 13 of its North American factories for 60 days starting in May, one of the longest shutdowns outside of a strike.

General Motors Corp. said Tuesday that its May U.S. vehicle sales dropped 29 percent, but showed significant improvement from their April levels.

Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday its U.S. sales fell 24 percent in May from a year ago, but sales rose 20 percent from April as the automaker continues to gain market share from its competitors now under bankruptcy protection.
