Joe, I think many of us will be reduced to watching old movies in our basements, movies that show "America as it was." We will regard these movies, not as camp, but as nostalgia. We will watch them, not derisively, but wistfully.

He was talking about a "78 Eldorado, but I think in his description of it he could've just as easily been describing several different '09 SUV's and pick-ups.

We'll still be able to dream. We just won't be able to fulfill our dreams anymore.

btw: By 1978 the Eldorado had already suffered from the heavy hand of government safety and pollution laws. Even then, you could only dream of Eldos past, like the 1970, with its 500 cubic inch high compression premium gas burning engine and bumpers that were designed to be polished rather than protect you from organos and grannies in Whole Foods parking lots.

Oh, how pathetic! The sad part is the gullible segment of the male population who allowed corporate image-makers to shape their "dreams" to the point where a huge, badly-made, personal auto was something to wish for.

That wasn't a "dream", Joe, that was a figment of corporate marketing strategy. You weren't an "alpha male", Joe, you were a gullible glutton. While you were practicing how to slouch properly behind the wheel of your mobile ejaculation, the real world belonged to men who dreamed of MacPherson struts and rack-and-pinion steering. While you were wallowing in nostalgia about your "acre of sheet metal... cruising down the River Road", someone gave away the manufacturing capacity of your country. Just another marketing scam called "supply-side economics".

Now, here you stand, having ignored all the "Dead End" signs, at the end of the pavement with all your fellow dupes, bemoaning the "thought police" confiscating your "dreams". Those aren't "dreams", Joe, those are rusty bits of scrap metal. Those aren't "factories", Joe, those are convention centers where we try to woo global manufacturers with competing tax breaks. Those aren't "jobs", Joe, those are bloated middle-management positions with nothing left to administrate. Those aren't "wages", Joe, not when you can't afford to buy the car you make. That's not "the American Dream", Joe, that's a derivative bubble.

What's pathetic is today's testosterone-challenged metrosexual male who's vehicle of choice is a bicycle, lest he harm Mother Earth.

There have been husbands and fathers, before and after the era of oversized cars, who packed their lunch boxes and took bicycles to urban manufacturing jobs to support their families. Nobody's writing weepy, nostalgic opinuendo columns about them.

What's pathetic are fathers too obese to play catch with their sons because they've been driving their Phallica to the corner store for cigarettes all their lives.

What's pathetic is the proliferation of glib, neo-con stereotypes that seek to portray the corporate ring in your nose as a symbol of nobility--the kind of cognitive dissonance that allows a man who refers to himself as a "dittohead" delude himself into thinking he's some kind of resolute non-conformist.

And if it were up to you, you'd make obesity a criminal offense, outlaw large vehicles, and ban the use of tobacco. Oh wait, you already did that one.

What's really pathetic are the proliferation of nanny-state fascists who know what's best for all of us and who won't be happy until laws are passed that prohibit any and all behavior that used to be considered primary benefits of living in a free society.

P.J. O'Rourke said it a lot better in a previous weekend's Wall Street Journal, as Soucheray noted on the air earlier this week.

Wow, that was great! Nothing like giving "Sooch" a little dose of reality.

I like the fact that as soon as GM got "protected" through bankruptcy and an infusion of another $30 billion, they start running these ridiculous ads about their 'new' car company! Glad to see our taxpayer dollars being spent so wisely.

There you go again, Blob, projecting your paranoid nightmares onto someone else. Rush is calling; he's got a fresh report on the Black Helicopters hovering over your house!

What's this Blob, more of your infantile projections? Thankfully, due to your 'lifestyle' choices, you're a dying breed.

And if it were up to you, you'd dictate everyone else's position to portray yourself as some pathetic martyr to what I would criminalize. All in a perverted attempt to criminalize the opinion of anyone who disagrees with you through rank, unsupported name-calling.

No one criminalized the El Dorado. No one made enormous, badly-built cars illegal. No one took away your god-given right to put leaves in your mouth and set them on fire. Smoking isn't "illegal", you just can't blow your second-hand smoke on other people in public places. You're perfectly free to get as fat as you want.

But, if you're going to write about how it's somehow intrinsically masculine to weep nostalgically over the "loss" of bad engineering, I'm going to write back to tell you that playing the whiney, stupid victim, for the sake of argument or any other reason, doesn't make you a man.

You don't know what I drive, if I smoke, how much I weigh, what gender I am, or how I vote. You're a dupe of your own spoon-fed stereotypes, just as Soucheray is a dupe of corporate marketing. You've both been drinking your own bath water and that doesn't make either one of you an example of manhood.

Don't include me in your gay fantasies, Blobber. You are clearly a secret fan of Larry Craig, your fellow gay/self-hating Rethuglican.

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Gemini

It's easy to become distracted and confused because your mind is wandering about in all sorts of different directions. You're also in a highly impressionable state so will believe almost anything you're told now, whether it's true or a total flight of fancy. Be wary of muddling others by only telling them half the story or letting your imagination fill in any gaps.
