This is a reflection of our recession based economy.
This isn't inherent to Toyota overall but primarily to their pickup truck line which is hurting due the higher gas prices as is the entire pickup truck industry. Unfortunately it doesn't necessarily spell Doom to Toyota at all for you can't buy/find a Prius without waiting for 6+ months for one. They'll just start building more Highlander hybrids.

How come the big Three didn't make a Prius first ? I ask you, Why does it take Toyota to do it and not GM the worlds largest Auto company ?

Its mis-management thats why. I like the Volt but that's too late. We have a new Camaro though with a V6/V8 that most consumers aren't going to be interested in as gasoline prices continue to rise.
I'm a car guy and love performance but in the name of saving the company management needs to get their priorities straight. GM shouldn't take a back seat at any time to some tinny car making Jap company that starts with Toy.

So Toyota is lambasted over a volunteer jobs bank (required to collect all those lucrative incentives that allowed them to build the plant so cheap to begin with) but it is OK for the Detroit 3 to have a JOBS bank, massive $100K+ buyouts, and countless layoffs?

Just sit back and enjoy the ride folks, because the Detroit 3 haven't hit rock bottom yet, they just announced plans to close a bunch of plants which historically has failed to return them to profitability. Read about GM's failures back in the early 1990's when they ousted Robert Stempel.

I just checked the sales data and the Toyota Camry alone outsells the entire Chrysler car division for YTD sales.

Is Chrysler competing with Toyota? Or is Chrysler competing with a nameplate made by Toyota?

For July 2008, the Ford Division sold 44,943 vehicles across all nameplates, while the Camry alone racked up 42,131. So basically, Camry is going to surpass the entire Ford car lineup, despite all the sales enjoyed by the Focus.

Whatever, just remember GM in the 80s when they were producing junk and EVERYBODY was buying it, no questions asked. Toyota is in that position right now. In a few years Blandyota will be a mere afterthought.
