$10 million renovation gives leaders sticker shock
AUSTIN -- By now, it's obvious that the Texas Governor's Mansion is undergoing a major renovation. But top state leaders were taken by surprise when the $10 million project was unveiled in August, long after the Legislature had adjourned for the year.
Since then, Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, has moved into a posh new residence inside a gated community in the Austin suburbs. Taxpayers are picking up the $9,900 monthly rent, plus an undisclosed sum for utilities.
