Magnesium sulfate given intravenously to pregnant women at risk of very preterm birth was not associated with benefit on neurological, behavioral, growth, or functional outcomes in their children at school age, according to a study in the September 17 issue of JAMA . Rates of adverse long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes for infants born at less than 28 weeks' gestation remain high relative to full-term infants.

Macquarie Expects Jump in Profit

MELBOURNE, Australia-Macquarie Group Ltd., Australia's largest investment bank, has forecast a 25% to 30% jump in net profit in the first half of its fiscal year, compared with a year earlier, but a fall from a strong result in the preceding six-month period. Increased performance fees from the bank's listed and unlisted funds are expected to lift the company's profit slightly for the year through March.
