Small city turns big page

Full story: Berkshire Eagle Online - Berkshires Week

Former colleagues from across the region and the state hailed Mayor John Barrett III as a "regional treasure," a "legendary" advocate for his community who displayed "grit" and "passion" in steering his city through its darkest times and preparing it for a bright future.

He was a mean and nasty person. Good to see him crushed by the vote of the people

The things that he did good are well outnumbered by the many cruel, and abusive things he did. this man was a dictator and needed to go years ago. Congratulations Dick Alcombright! Now North Adams can go from a communist dictatorship to a democracy.

What the knuckleheads who don't live in North Adams don't understand is that Barrett lost simply because of the way he treated people.

It was not that he said "No" to some pet projects.

It was that he would yell and swear at people if they challenged him in the slightest.

He would tell you that if you did not do things his way, you would suffer the consequences.

He would make up facts and figures to sound smart if you caught him off guard, and then he would start his "I find that offensive" routine if you pointed out that he was full of it.

He would spread rumors among his supporters to harm people who he saw as threats.(Tell Marie Harpin anything and the smear was out there.)

JOHN BARRETT WAS TOSSED OUT BECAUSE OF JOHN BARRETT.

Hopefully he chills out before he has a massive stroke.

I find it so interesting that John Barrett was blind sided. BLIND SIDED? That seems to me to be coming from a man who wasn't listening. "I put my message out there but they weren't listening." Wow, he was so out of touch with the people of his own city that he lost by close to 1000 votes? This coming from a man who started to campaign 2 weeks before the vote. From a man who had the complete support from the local newspaper that was reluctant to even cover or mention Dick Alcombright's name for the past 6 months. WOW!

People were saying all the time to Dick Alcombright, "I will vote for you but I can't come out publicly because my wife is a teacher or my husband works for the city and if Mayor Barret sees me he might fire my wife or my husband."

He only got what he deserved and the city got what they deserves too!

He didn't do his homework and for a teacher and educator his marks showed his efforts. Next time pay attention.

I find it sad that so many want to rant and rave about a man who seems to have been such a jerk, but no one finds it odd that the news papers still are printing articles about him and not the gentleman who won... shouldn't we be hearing the positive possiblities of the future and drop the nastiness of the past.... Lets look forward not back... and that goes for the local news sheets as well.

Wake up to what. The newspapers still endorsing Barrett even after the election, Wake up to people lauding over what has been accomplished in 26 years - Mass Moca which is more office space then museum - Joe Wolfe Field being taken from the youth of the city for a collegiate ball team - a new ball field that is still under construction after 3 years - Mohawk theater still under construction after 10 years - many people intimiated or told no to their idea's for North Adams before they could even get the idea out of their mouth because it wasn't Barrett's idea first. We are awake now and on a path to building a North Adams that will procede into the future as a place people want to come and stay.

The local paper (AdvoTransEagle) has been in the back pocket of the outgoing mayor for years... I'm sure this drooling, slobbering outpouring of accolades is just a directive from his political last will and testament.

OK, you made the same post about hate, etc, under "wow what garbage", "Vicious Alcombright" , "Pure Hate" and "Alcombright Nutjobs" what gives and any way you would let everyone know who you are or would that be to embarrassing for you? It seems that you're spending too much time on hate and the negative side of this. Please stop what you are doing! Thank you!

And just who are those 'collegues'? The Lottery Commissioner? Some of the peons he has bullied for the last twenty years? The fat chick who runs Xtra Mart? Some 85 year old broad down at the highrise in the early stages of Alzheimers? And of the politicians who have lauded this clown, truth be told they were either in his pocket or he was in theirs or they're just nice. Other than that, this guy's mom probably was'nt all that thrilled with him!

Calling Senator Kerry a joker is a crime!! You people are lucky that he even recognizes N.A. When I was young I found no joy in riding through your city...soon to be a town now! The turn-around North Adams has made in the last 20 years is remarkable and something you ALL should be proud of. Perhaps Barrett did love the power, but because of his power in Boston he was able to put North Adams on the map as a bright star for Western Massacusetts! Good luck to your new mayor and soon you will critisize him as well.

Hey,I like John Kerry. I voted for John Kerry. But,come on,Kerry has made some bad decisions. Does John Edwards ring-a-bell? And him endorsing Barrett? He might as well have thrown his support to the 'Taliban'! As for the 'town' thing,I believe that that's one of North Adams' biggest problems-we can't decide whether we're a 'City' or a 'Town'. Sounds like the same problem you hear some guys have when they can't decide whether they're gay or straight. There's all this inner-termoil going on. But,we'll straighten that out in time. As for Kerry,I like him and I'll vote for him again, but he has made some bad choices.

By the way,you said that you didn't even like driving through our town,(or city,or whatever we are),when you were a 'KID'? And so,I wonder what was a 'KID' doing driving anywhere? THAT'S ILLEGAL'! Yet and still, now you are 'applauding' what John Barrett has supposedly done to make this such a wonderful place? How would you knowif you've never spent any time here, how would you know what he has or has'nt done? How can you say anything one way or the other? You think because you saw something 'new' from the highway, that means something? I could be an 'EMPTY' building for all you know? Maybe a nice 'EMPTY' building, but an 'EMPTY' building nevertheless. If you've never stopped by,then for all you know this could be a ghost town or a big movie set with fake buildings? There is good and bad everywhere, and we have our share of it here, too. But,for most people this guy, this big wig, this political powerhouse that is supposed loved, hated and 'FEARED' by those in Boston has done very little for this place. It might look good, but that does'nt mean things are good. Like Barrett himself, what they call an 'EMPTY SUIT',this city or town might or might not be what it seems. Stop in and decide for yourself.

Crime? One of the rights that we hold dear as Americans is our right to criticize our politicians. But, wait, this is North Adams! I guess after 26 years of Il Duce crushing all dissent, people may have forgotten about that right.

North Adams is not a bright star on the map of western MA - at least, not yet. Currently it's a black hole for state funding going to prop up an inept administration. The only power Barrett had in Boston was as the most obnoxious beggar asking for crumbs - crumbs that the state was happy to hand out just to shut him up.
