Symphony shines in Carnegie spotlight

NEW YORK -- It was a serious-minded classical music concert with just a dash of Hollywood premiere.

At the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra's Carnegie Hall debut Saturday night, flashbulbs popped, and luminaries of another kind -- Van Cliburn, Mercedes Bass, novelist Sandra Brown -- beamed from the boxes. Home folks whooped after every piece and leapt to standing ovations, giving the atmosphere an unusual charge.

But anyone who was there purely to hear music was rewarded, too, thanks to the talents and musical enthusiasms of Music Director Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Read more

NSO Gives Rouse (but Not Liszt) His Due

Reprinted from yesterday's late editions

Contemporary music is often viewed as the spinach in the repast of a concert program: the part that's good for you but has to be gussied up to make you want to eat it. Accordingly, Leonard Slatkin warmed up Thursday night's Kennedy Center audience by having the National Symphony Orchestra play a brief and rather lugubrious-sounding excerpt of Christopher Rouse's Second Symphony during his spoken introduction before the work's first Washington performance. For composer, piece is deeply personal music

“So I am trying to reach this new lyricism, which is more pure [and] in a way suffers less. That is less centered in the 'me”

There are some composers who are able to separate their private lives from their music. But not Osvaldo Golijov.

He wrote Mariel, the piece for cello and orchestra that the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra will premiere at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, shortly after a friend died in a car crash.

Mariel Stubri and her husband were vacationing in the south of Chile when the fatal accident took place. At the time, she was nursing her baby. The piece Mariel, Golijov says, tries to capture the instant in which he received the awful news over the telephone. Read more

MUSIC: Eddins' Tchaikovsky charges at full force

The Charlotte Symphony let fly with one tempestuous Tchaikovsky symphony last spring, and Friday night it tackled another. This latest performance -- to borrow from a 1960s politician -- represented a choice, not an echo.

In April, guest conductor Andrew Grams electrified Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony by emphasizing vigor, precision and colorful details. Friday, another guest -- William Eddins, music director of the Edmonton Symphony in Canada -- took a different tack with Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony: He pulled out all the stops. It was a different way of stoking the fires. Read more
