Guild fashion show supports Symphony
“I think this is marvelous and such a great turnout, show of interest and all that the symphony is about, and fun, too!”
The Long Bay Symphony, along with 175 attendees, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a fashion show and luncheon at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club on Nov. 3.
The group hoped to raise about $5,000; funds are directed to the Youth Orchestra program for instruments and education, as well as to the full orchestra, said event co-chair Joanne Milnor of Murrells Inlet.
'The Symphony Guild is the support group for the Long Bay Symphony, consisting of men and women of diverse backgrounds from all over the country,' she said. 'Most of them have relocated here and came from a city that probably had a symphony orchestra and are aware that it takes money to keep a symphony going. The ticket sales on a concert cover only about half of the cost of presenting a program, so the guild helps by raising [supplemental] funds for the concerts and orchestra programs.' Read more

$100K Violin Reported Stolen From Car
For Nicolas Orbovich, losing his violin was like losing a member of the family.
A concert violinist, Orbovich said he left his instrument, made in 1892 and worth $100,000, in its case and on the backseat of his car Saturday in a parking lot in this northwestern Indiana city. He left the doors unlocked.
He said he returned less than five minutes later and, as he drove off, he realized it was gone.
'I'm devastated. It's like losing an immediate family member,' said Orbovich, a performer with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. 'If I leave for any amount of time, I always take it with me. It's just something I never figured would happen.' Read more
