Photo found in Bronx was of Madonna, not Marilyn Monroe
“If there ever was an embarrassing moment”
Imitation can be the sincerest form of confusion.
So learned a Las Vegas man who alerted the media this week that he thought he had found a rare photo at his Bronx service station of Marilyn Monroe posing nude as a hitchhiker. What he had was a famous photo of Madonna.
The image of the Material Girl, who often cast herself as a sort of latter-day Monroe, appeared in 'Sex,' her 1992 book of risque photography. In it, she posed in heels and handbag, with a cigarette in her mouth.
Lawrence Nicastro, 73, said he found the grainy, poster-size photo last year while going through storage items at his home in Las Vegas. He believed it had been left by a customer at the Bronx service station in 1962. Read more

Snapshots are universal. Almost everyone in the U.S. has been snapped and, more than likely, been the snapper.
The resulting photo record usually ends up in a drugstore envelope with the processed negatives and dumped in a box to be sorted later. If it is an especially good snapshot, it might go directly from the drugstore envelope onto the refrigerator door. A fortunate few are given a decorative edge and pasted into a craft-trendy scrapbook.
That's about as noble an end as a snapshot can expect, and yet most people consider that box of unsorted photographs one of their most precious possessions -- the thing that might win out over the beagle if the house were ever to catch fire. Read more
