There is a search underway for two men who opened fire on police during a high-speed chase.

A Sauk Village officer was hurt when his bullet-damaged car crashed along the Bishop Ford Freeway early Wednesday morning.

The suspects got away but police found their car a short time later behind an apartment building on Chicago's South Side. Police say the car was reported stolen last week.

Chicago and state police, some armed with assault rifles, searched the area near 82nd and Woodlawn for the suspects but they were unable to find the men. Chief Tom Lacheta, Sauk Village Police Department said the owner of the stolen car spotted it at a gas station in Sauk Village and called police.

I hope they catch the two trash bags who shot at this officer. I admire this officers courage and bravery. The department should hire more young aggressive officers who want to actually arrest the bad guys. In my opinion, alot of South Suburban Departments should hire more younger officers. They are more prone to being active then Officers who have 11 or more years on.

Hi all: From the looks of the picture, It looks like somebody hit that squad car cuz the damage is on the left back drivers side.. If he crashed the squad car, wouldn't the damage be on the front of the squad car? Or did the squad car spin around and hit something?

A Steger man faces charges in connection with the attempted murder of a Sauk Village police officer during a high speed chase last month.

Christopher J. Guy, 21, 194 Bayview Court, Steger, was charged this week with attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated discharge of a weapon. In a separate incident he also faces two counts of armed robbery in Crete. And in a third incident he faces one count of armed robbery in Steger, police said Thursday.

Terrell Phagan, 21, of Chicago, also has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated discharge of a weapon in the July 15 high speed police chase and shooting.

Shawn Winn, 20, 363 N. Broadway, Joliet, was charged with one count of armed robbery in Crete, police said. Guy and Winn are each being held on a $750,000 bond, Crete Police Chief Paul VanDeraa said.

Phagan was taken into custody in Steger on Wednesday and bond has been set at $650,000, police said.

VanDeraa said Thursday that other police departments are eyeing the men in connection with other incidents.

According to reports from last weekend's armed robberies, two men with handguns were driven by a third man in a white vehicle to Speedway, 1120 Main St., Crete, just before 3 a.m. Saturday, where they pointed guns at two attendants and made off with cash.

The next day, at 4:05 a.m., one of the same gunmen returned to Speedway, took cash and left in a white vehicle. Less than $1,000 was taken in the two incidents.

Minutes later that Sunday, Steger police responded to an alarm at Shell, 3507 Chicago Road. While brandishing a handgun, a man told a cashier that he wanted "the big money," Steger Police Chief Richard Stultz said.

Crete Sgt. John Enox spotted a fleeing white vehicle southbound on Union Avenue at 35th Street.

According to reports, the driver sped off, hit a utility pole and then fled on foot. Guy was apprehended in the 500 block of Richton Road, police said.

He was treated and released at a local hospital and then transported to the Crete jail where he tried to hang himself, VanDeraa said. Paramedics transported Guy to St. James Hospital where he was kept under watch.

Guy is now at the Will County Jail. Winn is in the Cook County jail, VanDeraa said.

In the July 15 incident, Sauk Village Police Chief Tom Lacheta said two men matching the description of two men involved in a carjacking in Chicago were spotted by an officer in Sauk Village. A pursuit at speeds between 80 and 100 miles per hour ensued along the Bishop Ford.

Lacheta said one of the men was hanging out the window firing a shotgun at pursuing police cars.

One officer was slightly injured when his car had to swerve to avoid bullets and crashed into concrete, Lacheta said.

David Schwab contributed to this report.

Not necessarily, appeared that he lost control slide and that is where the utility pole was.
