The meeting between Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona and President Obama Thursday at the White House illustrates why it is unlikely that there will be any genuine progress on the illegal immigration problem in our nation, at least for the immediate future.
While the meeting was described as cordial by the governor, and likely chalked up some points for Brewer's election efforts this fall, it is doubtful anything much changed in the attitudes of the two on this issue.
The president listened to Brewer's concerns and expressed his view that the only real solution is what has come to be characterized as “comprehensive” immigration reform.
That translates to a three-pronged approach: border enforcement, changes in immigration policy to address issues involving foreign workers and steps to address the issue of illegal migrants already living in America, including some form of amnesty.
This is the approach offered by former President George Bush, and once supported by key Arizona representatives in Congress. It was rejected and there has been no movement since then.
Brewer's comments after her meeting with Obama reflect why this is the case.
“The people of Arizona and the people of America want our borders secured,” Brewer said.“And they're not going to deal, in my opinion, with anything other than border security: the fence, the troops, the additional resources that we need to make sure our borders are secured and that illegal trespassing into the state of Arizona and into America is stopped.”
Her views, shared by many, are reflective of why it will be very difficult to break this stalemate over illegal immigration.
