Polaris buys Aixam Mega
Polaris has purchased French automobile maker Aixam Mega, which makes small cars and commercial vehicles.

The company, formally known as A.M. Holding, is based in Aix-lex-Bains, France, and had about $110 million in sales last year. Polaris (NYSE: PII) reported about $3.2 billion in sales.

Medina-based Polaris will meld this business into its existing on-road vehicle division that makes Goupil and GEM motorcars and Victory and Indian Motorcycles, the company said in an announcement Thursday morning.

Aixam Mega's main products are called quadricycles, and they're sold under Aixam and Mega brands. They are light weight and travel at low speeds. In many countries, drivers can use them without full automobile driver licenses.

The Aixam City model comes is about 9 feet long and 5 feet wide. It's max speed is about 28 miles per hour and its range is about 310 miles per tank of diesel fuel. There's also an electric version that can travel from 40 to 60 miles per charge, depending on conditions of use.

Polaris is paying cash for the company and expects it to positively impact full-year 2013 earnings per share after acquisition costs.

Polaris said last year it plans to build a $1 billion business by 2018 selling small electric and electric-hybrid cars and trucks.
