My family and I, as well as many of my friends, grew up on Caddo Lake (Texas Side). I have some crazy memories about the lake and its inhabitants.

I remember on day, my Dad carried us to Caddo to go swimming at a popular cove named “Annie Glades”. This swimming hole was accented with a high cliff and a long hemp-rope hanging from a huge cypress tree; I was always a little scared to swing as far as some of my siblings did, mainly because the water was so deep and dark (cypress trees tannin water to a very black color). On this particular day, Dad had set out some yo-yos farther down, off a sandbar. After a while, Dad abruptly returned, running back up the pathway, yelling,“You kids stay out of the water and get in the back of the truck! He added,“Don’t follow me down there!” Well, you don’t tell a group of teenagers not to follow you, especially using this sort of tone of voice. So of course, we did exactly the opposite. My older brother and I, along with a couple of others who were there, sneaked down the trail. As we were getting closer to the sandbar, we could hear what sounded like an old woman hollering, along with splashing water. We could also hear our dad talking in his usual calm, deep voice. I could see dad holding his .45, pointing it at the water’s edge, saying,“Lady, let go of the pole and I’ll help you get back on the bank. We snuck in for a closer look (my Dad had noticed us by this time, but just motioned us to get behind him) There was this skinny old black lady who had hooked a huge channel cat off the end of a fallen tree that was laid across the water. During her struggle with the fish, she had stirred up a mother alligator who had prepared her nest right under the knees of that big cypress tree. The gator was snapping at the old woman’s feet and the old woman was tugging on her cane pole. She yelled at Dad,“Now Mistuh, you needs to shoots that damn gator, cuz she ain’t gittin’ my goddamn catfish; I fish’t along time to ketch that damn fish and there ain’t gonna be no damn gator stealin’ it from me!” It was a hilarious venue; the old woman trying to walk backwards on the log, pulling on that catfish and slapping the water with the other end of her pole, Dad pleading with her to let him help her and the whole time the gator is hissing and thrashing at the old black woman. As a finale, Dad shot the mama gator, mainly because he feared the old woman might fall off the log and the gator would get to her (she was about 6 ft long, not too big for a Caddo gator) and he even had us help her land the fish. LOL… she was really tired, but proud that she had caught such a large catfish (I think it was around 20 lbs or so) dad dragged the gator to the truck, along with us kids and the old lady. She rode in the front with him, whereas he dropped her at her shack just down the road. Dad called a Game Warden friend of his and was told that it would be recorded and to do whatever he wanted with the gator carcass. I never knew what he actually did with it.

Wait, what? You used a gun to protect someone?

You called the game warden? You did the right thing?

Unpossible!
