Old Joe has been on the square since the late 19th century. The Daughters of the Confederacy raised the money for Joe. He is facing North, ready to defend against Northern invaders.
Ironically, Joe is modeled after a Union soldier from the Spanish-American war period. His kit bag has "US" on it and his rifle is a model made after the civil war. The only difference Joe has from other statues up North is the "CS" on his belt buckle. Say it ain't so, Joe! He is (mostly) a yankee!

anyday now, they will be removing these statues from courthouses and squares all over the south. Claining they are tributes to slavery and racial hatred..
