You can see the opening where a road went down to the river's edge. That road was built in 1816 and the gap can still be seen in a 1900 photo. That road was built to run right next to the creek.

After the new cast iron bridge was completed in 1839 Dunlap's Creek was rerouted under the new cast iron bridge.

Buildings were erected on top of the old creek bed and that's why they crumbled.

My Father, Howard Thomas Porter, always told me the cast iron bridge over Dunlap's Creek was the first cast iron bridge built in the United States. My Great Grandfather worked on building this bridge. I was also told by my Father that there is a plaque with his name on it. Never saw the plaque. If it still exists, I would be proud to have a picture of that.

I have a photo of the new plague in full vived color. There was an old plaque on the bridge railing. I have some video of that too. Check back in this site. I'll have to search out the photos.

Of course the old plaque was placed long after the bridge was built. The original bridge was much narrower with masonry walls. At a later date they added sidewalks and an iron railing.

Thanks Harry. Appreciate this picture of the plaque. Seeing the original with my Great Grandfather's name on it would be sensational. Appreciate, as many others do, your efforts in bringing these pictures to this forum for us all to enjoy. I am a Brownsville native. But lived most of my life in 3 other states because my Father and Mother met at Brownsville High School, both worked at the G.C. Murphy Company in Brownsville and then my Father entered the Management program and worked with Murphy's until they closed all the stores.
My Grandparents lived in Hiller.
