Believe it or not, Bushwick HS and the Irving Library pictured here, as well as all the homes on Woodbine and Palmetto Sts between Irving and Knickerbocker Ave were built on the site of the old Union Cemetery. The Cemetery took up the blocks bounded by Putnam Ave, Irving Ave, Palmetto St, and Knickerbocker Ave. They dug up the cemetery and removed the bodies and relocated them to a cemetery in Flushing. The school and library was then built on the site.
Imagine today them announcing they were going to dig up a cemetery and build a school on it!!

Bway...you just made me snort with laughter. Bushwick High School is actually now three or four small separate schools within the huge structure. I graduated from one of these small institutions. My school was located on the fifth floor. No wonder I kept hearing voices when I used to walk around the hallways...jk.
