I'm sorry, I should have clicked on it to full size before I commented. It was taken during the original construction. Note the old car in the photo. Imagine the stonework at the top of that chimney!

Only that it was a public works program designed to provide jobs during the depression era. Basically, the goverment figured that since they were going to handing out checks anyway, why not improve the nation's infrastructure? They started massive construction projects that built schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, parks, and government buildings. Instead of welfare, people were given jobs. The money they made was spent on food, clothing, cars, homes, etc, thus stimulating the economy and bringing the country out of the depression. WPA stood for Works Progress Administration.
Wouldn't this be a great idea today? Don't you think that many would rather have a job rather than just sit at home collecting a check and spending it on pills to help them get over the feelings of worthlessness and boredom?
