I thought I felt enough of a sense of loss and sadness before I read the very excellent story "Peace Officer: Could APD Crisis Training Have Saved A Veteran's Life", by Patrick Lohmann, Weekly Alibi, March 10-16, 2011, Page 8. I had never read such a well-written, informative and hard-hitting piece in ANY of Albuquerque's newspapers as this.

I learned a great many things not only about the tragic and senseless incident which took this Honorably-Discharged, DISABLED VETERAN'S life, but also about the incident itself, and Albuquerque Police Department's apparent callous and wanton disregard for human life. There are a great many things that the public does not know, and which are disclosed in this article.
The first shocking thing is that Albuquerque Police Officers are NOT COMPELLED to take an ANNUAL CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM COURSE. They can "opt out" of such training. The course "teaches officers skills such as negotiation and communication, how to approach and DE-ESCALATE suicide situations, and the basic signs of common
psychoses and brain disorders, including post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The late Kenneth Ellis III not only had a SERVICE-CONNECTED, LINE-OF-DUTY Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), but was also suffering from PTSD.

The second thing I learned was that according to
1) Ellis at NO TIME pointed a weapon at an Albuquerque Police Officer, nor anyone else, and held his weapon to the side of his own head at all times. During the 9 minute stand-off, he repeatedly asked for cigarettes and a bit of space, but got neither. At no time ever did he threaten verbally, or physically, any APD Officer or civilian.

2) I learned that in addition to Trey (Byron) Economidy pulling Kenneth Ellis III over for allegedly having the wrong plates on Ellis's car (He did not. The month before Ellis had gotten a traffic ticket and the license plate did indeed belong with the car) there were 56 other officers massed around Ellis at the time of his shooting.

3) The APD Officer that pulled the trigger and ended Kenneth Ellis III's life and made an orphan out of Kenneth Ellis IV, Brett Lampiris-Tremba, DID NOT EVEN REALIZE HE HAD PULLED THE TRIGGER, AND ACCORDING TO WITNESSES WAS HEARD TO EXCLAIM:
"Was that me?! That was me, wasn't it?!" Heard by a total of 35 WITNESSES. Said exclamation then proving that Brett Lampiris-Tremba was not motivated by fear of his safety and life and had
"an accidental discharge" of his weapon.

4) At first, 15 APD Officers at the scene falsely told investigators that Kenneth Ellis III HAD SHOT HIMSELF.

5) APD Crisis Intervention Team training cautions officers that they should not "surround those at risk of suicide; take care that the individual feels he or she is being understood, and minimize unnecessary noises and crowds." "Simply repeating commands is NOT verbal de-escalation". Further, the academy and refresher training courses admonish officers to "avoid rash and violent intervention. It is important to be aware that some types of police intervention may lead to or increase violent reactions".

6) Albuquerque Taxpayers are going to take a big hit out of this case due to Officer Brett Lampiris-Tremba's actions, and what he said after the shooting; due to Officer Trey (Byron) Economidy III's false statement that the license plate did not match the vehicle Ellis was driving; the statement that 15 Albuquerque P.D. officers initially made about Ellis shooting himself; and of course, Trey (Byron) Economidy III's statements on facebook listing his occupation as "human waste disposal"; and finally due to Albuquerque P.D. itself allowing officers to "opt out" of vital coursework which can save not only civilians' lives, but Officers lives as well.

The reader is also encouraged to learn about the equally tragic case of Honorably-Discharged, Combat Medic in RVN, Disabled Veteran of the US Army, Jerome J. Hall, tortured by 3 APD Officers.

Thank you. Because of your post, I picked up a copy of The Weekly Alibi at Sunflower Farmers' Market and read the full article. I can't believe the clueless
minds that run APD and hire others exactly like them.

I was not aware of any of this until I read your thread and went and got a copy. Thank you. I smell another big, fat settlement at the expense of ABQ taxpayers.

What a sick monster... Riding around in an automobile with a gun, then hopping out and sticking it against his head. He could've shot anyone else in a split second. PTSD is bs use as an excuse by losers.
