Little Black Girl Grown Up

Full story: www.thesaudavoice.com

Before I could put words to the feeling, I knew. I was different. The kind of different that left me feeling unnoticed, unattractive and unimportant - invisible. Once I became too old to be “cute,” I became smart as in, “She’s so smart,” but never again “cute” or “pretty.” I may have been called these things during my adolescent years, but I don’t remember hearing them. Something I’m sure many other little black girls have experienced. Sometimes I think we’re the only set of girls in the world that adults never think to call “beautiful.” As a result, our form of beauty is never affirmed, planting those first seeds of self-doubt in our very young and impressionable minds.

That article was dumb.

" boys pass an obviously pretty brown girl and never look twice." Ok. so she's brown skinned.

Then she moves down south.

" I was instantly labeled “light-skinned” or “redbone”"

Bullsht. This is another article praying on the insecurities of black women.

Black women have to stop falling for this garbage.

I'm a Black adult female and I always get called pretty. I've had whole years where perfect strangers walked up to me and said they found me pretty before they said hello. With that said, being called pretty is not that big of a deal. In fact I think good looks make life harder for a BW. Everybody feels free to hate on you. It's like you don't have a real friends, guys don't really love you because they believe you'll leave them for a guy with more money just because you can get a rich man's attention and most of them just want to be seen out with a good looking girl. It's basically trading one set of problems for another set of problems. Besides, I think racism probably has a lot to do with why a lot of Black women perceived themselves as being ignored, quite possible that it's jealousy. People are jealous of BW.

No I think it's true, I am 1/2 and 1/2 and grew up in all white towns and boys never looked twice at me. Then I went to college and suddenly guys thought I was hot. I met a girl from Texas who took one look at me and said "You're a redbone"

So these things do happen. There is a difference between preying on insecurities and echoing experiences.

I'm from the South (Kentucky) and can't recall hearing that particular term used on over 40 years. One can still hear some of the more common slurs, among the more uneducated,in some parts of the region. But for the most part these names are losing useage in everyday speech,as they should.

It all depends where you're from and where you're currently at. In my hometown of Ohio they still use that term. It depends on who prefers to use it too.

I suppose one would hear them (Racial slurs)from the less educated. I mean discounting the usual bigots....

Candy, I am glad to hear that many people shower you with compliments but trust me, life as an average woman is not that great.
I am average height, slim, educated, long hair, nice complexion, etc.. but I get asked out on a date only once a year and I am almost 30 and never been engaged, married or ever been in a relationship with anyone I would ever consider a life partner. I often wonder if my luck would be different if I were a beautiful woman. Oh well..I guess I can dream. Bottom line, don't ever make being beautiful something bad. That is b.s and you know it.

Are you sure you are not beautiful? Based on your self description, you sound like a beautiful woman. Maybe you have been conditioned to believe that you are not beautiful, when in fact you are. People do try to make pretty women feel bad. And maybe you don't get asked out a lot because guys are intimdated. Have you ever noticed how a lot of really ignorant and unattractive women have a lot of men? Change you perception and leave the brothers alone. I bet you're a knockout, you just don't get told because maybe people think you already know.

Daily Horoscope for November 7

Aries

It's a fortunate day for the Ram, but some of you may feel pulled apart by the pressures of home, family and career. It's time to take it easy, if family togetherness has worn you out. On the other hand, the romantic and financial energies are strong, so single Rams who are on the prowl should do very nicely thankyou.
