Sixty years after President Truman desegregated the military, senior black officers are still rare, particularly among the highest ranks.

Black officers are not Rare
People need to think about how small of a perentage black men make up in this country, then compare that to the percentage of CEO's, managers, military officers that we make up. |
Now jus' hole on dere. Dat be sum of dat fancy white-mans 'rithmatick. Wees needs mo' den dat dere puposhinate stuff. We be needin mo so we kin make up for all da pass injustices. Dat because wees needs reparashuns!!! |

In order to be an officer you need a bachelors degree. Many blacks sign up for the Military to get their college education paid for. After they have done their time they go on to the civilian World where they can make twice the money.
Look at Colin Powell, he was a 4 star General and he probably made less than $70,000 a year. Since he has retired from the Military he has become a millionaire. The Military is good for getting expierience an also free schooling but you make twice the money on the outside. |

There are black officers in the military and in large numbers, but it does depend upon the MOS. I am an black infantry officer and the numbers are less than let's say medical MOS black officers.

Good point rwb. I served 20 years in the Army (retired NCO). I worked under officers of many races. Being white, I can't answer if there was a lot of racism in the Army. It exists everywhere but in my experience, seems we were all treated equally and by merit. It was a wonderful experience. |
From my experience the racism in the military is about the same as anywhere else. I have seen racist officers and I have seen cool officers, I am in the National Guard and on my civilian job (electrical engineering) I have seen racists engineers and non-racists engineers. Racism does exist but if you dwell on it your doomed, it's like any obstacle that must be overcome (USE METT-TC LOL); also racism isn't just black and white, I have seen racism in many different shades of grey, but like anything you overcome it like anything else. As African Americans I think we are dealing with a past in our history where people in the 1960's to today are discouraged from joining the military, especially now with Iraq and Afghanistan. It's not like Jessie Jackson or Farrakhan encourge military service. What role models actually encourage joining the military. Yes we have Colin Powell. But who else. I think a lot about he movie "boys inthe hood" where the father tells his son to not join the military. You have Muhammed Ali who didn't join when drafted and now he is some hero, but when you look at Native Americans their enlistment rate is about 70% and they are encouraged in their culture to join up, while we are not in our culture. That I feel is a major problem to the rarity of black officer. |

Frankly I didn't experience any negative racial experiences when I was in the service ( ARMY) either. It seemed like the Military didn't tolerate discrimination on any level. We even had an E.O.council on which I served a term on the board as a rep. We would take complaints from servicemen and when the board met on wednesdays, we'd discuss how to resolve any serviceman's complaints. And get this. Everyone knew I was gay but not even the commander gave a damn because they liked me because I did my job so well. I had a good time in the military and I was basically serving openly gay because everyone knew my SO but they all loved me so no one cared. |

I believe the best branch of service for AA is the Army. The worst is the Marines. The Navy and Airforce and Coast Guard are in the middle.
I com from an Army town Columbus,GA. home to Ft. Benning. I saw plenty of AA enlisted and officers in the Army. And most blacks who have been in the service have a favorable view of the Army while people who joinedother branches of the service will tell you stories of the subtle racism that they faced. I come from the Southern part of the country and I think many AA still are encouraged to join the Military. But many are told to wait until these two Wars end. |

Have you looked into the pay rate of military general officers lately? Those guys are getting paid. Their "BASE" annual salary is in the 6 figure range though I grant you that as CIVILIAN, I now have less education than they do but I make more than they do. I'm just a nurse (agency nursing) and I have been making 6 figures for a few years now. There are nurses that I know that only have an associate degree in nursing that are making more than people with Doctorate degrees in some fields. But overall, military pay is not that bad but I wouldn't go into the military to get rich cause it ain't gonna happen. |

1 i remember a lot of stories a few years back of how enlisted people in the Military were qualified for FOOD STAMPS. I was always single when i was in the Navy but i knew sme married guys who struggled to make it on their pay. But I guess it was better for officers. But Military pay is a lot less than what people make in the Civilian World. |
